Lateef Fagbemi, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) renowned for his legal acumen and strategic prowess, has assumed a significant role in the Nigerian government as he takes on the portfolio of Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. President Bola Tinubu, recognizing Fagbemi’s expertise, has entrusted him with this pivotal responsibility.

Born in Ijagbo, Kwara State, North Central Nigeria, Fagbemi (64) has solidified his reputation as a legal heavyweight through his remarkable career trajectory. He earned his law degree from the University of Jos in 1984 and was swiftly admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1985. His academic pursuits further led him to obtain a master’s degree in Law (LLM) from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 1987.

Fagbemi’s exceptional legal acumen propelled him to attain the prestigious title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria at a remarkably young age of 37, while concurrently building his private legal practice. His prowess in the courtroom has been evident through his representation in numerous high-profile cases, notably including the 2007 election case of former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

In the aforementioned case, Fagbemi led Amaechi’s legal team and skillfully persuaded the Supreme Court to validate his client’s gubernatorial election victory, underscoring his capability to navigate intricate legal landscapes.

Fagbemi’s prominence was further highlighted during his tenure as the lead counsel of the All Progressives Congress at the Presidential Election Petitions Court sitting in Abuja. In this capacity, he steered the legal strategy that sought to dismiss the petitions of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, demonstrating his dedication to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.

Now, as Nigeria’s 24th Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi occupies a critical position at the helm of the Federal Ministry of Justice. In this role, he serves as the chief law officer of the president and the federation, overseeing a broad spectrum of legal matters. The ministry’s scope encompasses various government agencies and departments, including those dedicated to public prosecution, citizens’ rights, and legal drafting.

With his comprehensive legal background, resolute commitment, and history of advocating for justice, Lateef Fagbemi SAN is poised to leave an indelible mark on Nigeria’s legal landscape as he assumes the pivotal role of Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
