Early Life and Education
Hon. Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad was born on October 27, 1953, in Chanchaga Local Government Area in Minna, Niger State. He embarked on his educational journey with his basic education at the Native Authority School, Minna, from 1960 to 1966. Following this, he attended Sheikh Sabbah College, now known as Sardauna Memorial Secondary School, Kaduna, where he completed his secondary school education from 1967 to 1971. His quest for knowledge led him to Abdullahi Bayero College, now Bayero University, Kano, from 1972 to 1973, where he obtained his Pre-degree Certificate. Subsequently, he pursued an LLB (Hons.) at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, from 1973 to 1976, and a BL at the Nigerian Law School in 1977. In the pursuit of advanced legal studies, he studied at Warwick University in Coventry, UK, earning his LLM from 1982 to 1983, and at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, where he obtained an Advanced Certificate in Practice and Procedure.
Career Highlights
Hon. Justice Dattijo embarked on his professional career as a Higher Registrar at the High Court of Justice in Minna in 1976. He also completed his mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program between 1977 and 1978. His commitment to the legal profession led to his appointment as a Magistrate Grade II in 1978, and he continued to advance in his career, becoming the Chief Magistrate in 1984. In 1986, he was appointed as the Chief Registrar and, subsequently, as a Judge of the High Court in Niger State in 1989. His dedication to the judiciary was further recognized when he was appointed as a Justice of the Court of Appeal in 1998. He went on to serve as the Presiding Justice in the Sokoto Division of the Court of Appeal in 2009 and as the Presiding Justice in the Port Harcourt Division in 2010.
On July 10, 2012, Hon. Justice Dattijo was elevated to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, a position he holds to this day. Furthermore, in June 2022, he was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the National Judicial Council.
Personal Life and Interests
Hon. Justice Dattijo is happily married and has children. Beyond his illustrious legal career, he enjoys various hobbies, including fishing, reading, watching Hausa films, and listening to Hausa music.
