Profile of Musa Aliyu, new ICPC chairman

Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu Esq, a legal luminary and reformist, assumed the esteemed position of State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Jigawa State on September 30, 2019. Appointed by His Excellency, Alhaji Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, MON, the Governor of Jigawa State, Dr. Aliyu hails from the illustrious Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Dr. Aliyu’s academic journey began at Bayero University Kano, where he acquired his LL.B degree in 2003. Demonstrating a keen enthusiasm for law, he gained admission to the Nigerian Bar in 2004 and embarked on an extensive legal career, punctuated by periods devoted to further studies. In 2011, he obtained an LL.M Degree in Islamic Law from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, reflecting his multifaceted academic pursuits. Notably, he achieved the pinnacle of his academic journey by earning a PhD degree in 2019 from the School of Law at Universiti Utara Malaysia, specializing in Constitutional Law with a focus on the Appointment and Discipline of Judicial Officers in Nigeria.

Commencing his legal practice at the prestigious law offices of AKI P.A. and Company in Gombe State, Dr. Aliyu later transitioned to A.A. Umar & Co. in Kano. This move placed him in the esteemed law firm founded by the late Aliyu Umar SAN, a former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice for Kano State. Here, he honed his legal acumen and contributed significantly to the legal profession through various notable cases.

Dr. Aliyu’s passion for academia is evident in his over ten publications in peer-reviewed journals and active participation in conferences within Nigeria and Malaysia. He is an avid member of the Nigerian Bar Association and Nigeria Association of Law Teachers, displaying his commitment to the advancement of the legal field. His tenure as Vice-Chairman and Chairman of several NBA Kano Branch committees underscores his dedication to enhancing the legal community.

A forward-thinking individual, Dr. Aliyu advocates for a unified and efficient legal system. He envisions and implements reforms within the Jigawa State Ministry of Justice, utilizing modern processes and information technology tools to enhance service delivery. Notably, he has played a pivotal role in numerous legal cases across various courts, leaving an indelible mark on Nigerian law, jurisprudence, and advocacy.

His dedication to human development is evident through his community service, pro bono cases, legal clinical services, and advocacy for justice.
