Profile of new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Major General Waidi Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff (COAS), following a major shake-up in the nation’s military leadership aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
Major General Shaibu, a highly experienced officer of the Nigerian Army Armour Corps, belongs to the 41 Regular Combatant Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna. Over the years, he has distinguished himself through numerous command, operational, and staff roles across the country.
Before his latest appointment, Major General Shaibu served as the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, the military operation responsible for combating insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East. He also previously commanded the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, where he served concurrently as the Sector 1 Commander of Operation Hadin Kai.
A battle-tested field commander, Major General Shaibu is widely respected within the military for his discipline, professionalism, and results-driven leadership style. During his tenure in the North-East, he spearheaded several initiatives to boost troop morale, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen inter-agency cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
He has been an advocate for discipline, vigilance, and professionalism among troops, often warning against indiscipline and substance abuse within the ranks. Under his leadership, new training programs and facilities were introduced to enhance the capabilities of officers and soldiers in the field.
Major General Shaibu’s strategic outlook and operational experience position him to lead the Nigerian Army at a time when the country faces complex security challenges. His appointment reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to revitalising the Armed Forces and ensuring a more coordinated and proactive approach to national defence.
