The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has advised Nigerians to celebrate Valentine’s Day responsibly, stressing the importance of protection in intimate relationships.
Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director General of NACA, stated in a press release signed by Mrs. Toyin Aderibigbe that individuals should prioritize safety by making informed decisions to protect themselves and their partners from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
“HIV remains a major public health challenge, but it is preventable. Risky behaviors like unprotected sex, multiple partners, and substance abuse increase the chances of transmission,” Dr. Ilori warned.
She urged Nigerians to celebrate love while prioritizing their health, adding, “HIV is preventable, and we have the tools to stop its spread. Love responsibly, get tested, and make informed choices.”
The agency also emphasized the importance of knowing one’s HIV status, encouraging regular testing as part of personal healthcare. Free HIV testing is available at all government hospitals nationwide.
