A protest erupted in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Tuesday following the sudden death of a student who was shot by police while on his way to sit for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exam.

According to eyewitnesses, police officers were pursuing a fleeing vehicle suspected to be driven by ‘Yahoo boys’ when an officer fired a shot that accidentally struck the student.

Naija News reports that the incident took place on Gbagi Market Road. The student was riding a motorcycle with his twin brother when the bullet missed the intended target and hit him instead.

He was rushed to Welfare Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

In reaction to the tragedy, market traders and sympathizers staged a protest, carrying the student’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat to demand justice.

Security personnel were deployed at the secretariat’s entrance to manage the crowd as protesters called for accountability and reforms in police procedures.

So far, neither the Oyo State Police Command nor the state government has released an official statement on the incident.
