Protest looms as new BENPOLY Rector, Usman Kuti reportedly increases fees by 100 per cent
Newly sworn-in Benue State Polytechnic Rector, Dr. Usman David Kuti, has stated that to sustain the good efforts of the Polytechnic’s previous administration of Prof. Hycent O. Oluma, students must be made to pay double of their tuition and other registration fees.
Dr. Kuti, who directed the Polytechnic governing council to come up with a 100% increment on the school fees, said there was no going back on the decision as the school.
According to him, the school authority needed more money to function effectively in other to meet up with the numerous challenges confronting the Idoma academic front.
By this decision, the school of business comprising Accounting, Marketing and Business Studies, are now to pay N78, 000.00 as against the old N39,000.00 for Ordinary National Diploma students while those pursuing Higher National Diploma Certs are to pay N106,000.00 as against the old N53,000.00.
These apply to all other departments in the school.
The decision has however been challenged by concerned students and members of the Polytechnic chapter of the Students Union Government.
The school chapter of the SUG senate lamented that the school management has refused to appoint anyone as SUG President since the last President graduated, stressing that their aim was to ensure a hitch-free hike of tuition and other registration fees before appointing someone to lead the student union body.
The concerned students said under this economic downturn, recession and hard times, the Polytechnic is expected to understand with her students over the hardship and not inflict pains or further impoverish them in the name of school fees hike.
The concerned students who did not give a fixed date for the protest, said the students’ union leadership shall meet and any date arrived and agreed date shall be communicated to every students to come out enmass for the peaceful protest.
NEW-NIGERIA REPORTERS learnt also that students have deserted the school since resumption on January 7th 2017 as a result of the increments.
One student, Oloche Paul, who spoke to New-Nigeria Reporters’ correspondent during his visit to the school, said students were finding it difficult to start even registration as everything has been increased by 100%.
The new Rector, Dr. Usman David Kuti, could not be reached to comment on the development as no one at his office was willing to address the press.
When asked why the school is the one to appoint the school’s SUG President instead of election; Mr. Oloche said the school forbids conducting SUG elections because they needed a stooge, a “yes sir” kind of guy(s) that would succumb to their billings any day so they appoint whoever is ready to accept and serve their aims.
