Sergio Rico, the goalkeeper of Paris Saint-Germain, is on the brink of a remarkable milestone in his recovery journey. Almost three months after a harrowing equine accident that led to a traumatic brain injury and placed him in a coma, Rico is preparing to be discharged from Seville’s Virgen del Rocio hospital.
Reliable sources from the hospital have confirmed that the 29-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has been granted the authorization to bid farewell to the medical facility on Friday, signaling an uplifting step forward in his path to healing.
The incident, which transpired during a local festival involving a horse, led to Rico’s hospitalization on May 28. After a period of profound concern, his gradual progress culminated in his transfer from the hospital’s intensive care unit on July 5.
In a testament to his resilience, he took to social media just five days after moving out of intensive care, sharing a reassuring message that offered solace and hope to those concerned about his health.
“I want to thank each and every person who has shown me and sent me their affection in these difficult days,” wrote Rico on Instagram.
“I am still working on my recovery which each day is getting better.
“I feel very fortunate, once more, thank you to everyone and I hope to be able to see you soon.”
The goalkeeper won the Europa League twice with his hometown club Sevilla and joined Paris Saint-Germain permanently in 2020 after a loan spell there.
