Rangers fan killed in Istanbul ahead of Fenerbahce clash

A Rangers supporter who traveled to Istanbul to watch his team face Fenerbahce was tragically killed in a traffic accident just hours before the Europa League last-16 clash, both clubs confirmed on Thursday.
The fan, whose identity has not been disclosed, had arrived in Turkey’s largest city ahead of the match against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.
Traffic camera footage published by SabahTV captured the moment a pedestrian sprinted across a wide boulevard before being struck by a car. Reports indicate the accident occurred in the Besiktas district before dawn on Thursday. Authorities have since detained two drivers in connection with the incident.
A spokesperson for the British embassy confirmed that consular assistance had been offered to the victim’s family but did not provide further details.
Rangers FC expressed their sorrow in a statement on X, saying, “We are devastated to have learned of the passing of one of our supporters in a road traffic accident overnight in Istanbul. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
Fenerbahce also extended their condolences, stating, “We have learned with deep sorrow that a Rangers FC fan who came to Istanbul to support his team in the UEFA Europa League last-16 match lost his life in a traffic accident.” The Turkish club also expressed sympathy to the fan’s family, Rangers FC, and their supporters.
