Saudi Arabia has officially launched a bid, titled “Growing Together,” to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, as announced by the Saudi Arabia Football Federation (SAFF).
In October of last year, Saudi Arabia emerged as the sole contender to host the tournament after Australia withdrew from the race just hours before the FIFA deadline for countries to declare their interest.
Despite being the only remaining contender, FIFA regulations mandate that the Gulf Kingdom must formally bid for the tournament before final confirmation by a FIFA congress later this year.
Speaking on the bid, Yasser Al Misehal, President of the Saudi Arabia Football Federation, highlighted the country’s “rapid transformation” as a key factor in their bid’s strength.
“Sharing our football narrative with the world holds immense significance,” he added.
“We have made unprecedented strides in both men’s and women’s football, and our bid stands as an open invitation to the world to be part of this exciting journey.”
According to reports from the BBC, Saudi Arabia has invested over £5bn in football as part of its efforts to diversify its economy in the upcoming years.
However, some critics, particularly in the West, have raised concerns of “sportwashing,” accusing Saudi Arabia of using major sporting events—such as Formula One, golf, and boxing—to divert attention from human rights violations.
