Referees will provide live explanations of VAR decisions to both fans in the stadium and viewers at home during the Italian Cup semi-finals and final, Serie A announced on Monday.
According to the league, the two-legged semi-finals—which include a high-profile Milan derby—and the final in May will serve as a testing ground for new audio technology that allows referees to communicate their decisions directly.
However, this technology will only be used to explain rulings following on-field reviews, where referees, prompted by the VAR control room, assess incidents using the pitch-side monitor.
Additionally, starting this weekend, Serie A matches will feature “VARDict” — a system that notifies fans via stadium big screens whenever a decision is under review or undergoing a lengthy VAR check.
