The House of Representatives has introduced a bill to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, seeking to enable the creation of additional Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benue State.

The proposed legislation, tagged HB2527, is sponsored by Rep. David Ogewu, who represents the Oju/Obi Federal Constituency (APC). The bill successfully passed its second reading in the House on Tuesday, October 28, following an extensive debate on its general principles.

While moving the motion for the bill’s second reading, Rep. Ogewu explained that the constitutional amendment aims to strengthen grassroots governance by bringing government closer to the people. He emphasized that Benue State’s large landmass and growing population make it necessary to establish additional local councils to ensure equitable development and effective administration.

The motion was seconded by Rt. Hon. Chinedu Ogar, who represents the Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency, describing the proposal as a positive step toward deepening democracy and improving service delivery in rural areas.

Rep. Ogewu expressed confidence that once enacted, the amendment would clear the way for the creation of new LGAs in Benue State, particularly within his constituency. He also recalled that similar efforts were made by Senator George Akume, then Governor of Benue State, at the end of his second term in 2007, though those attempts were unsuccessful.

The bill has now been referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative consideration.
