Reps summon EFCC Chair, Bobrisky, others over alleged bribery scandal

The House of Representatives has summoned the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Bobrisky, VeryDarkMan, and all officers involved in the prosecution of the case against Bobrisky.

In a letter issued by the Lead Chairman of the joint committee, Jon Ginger Onwusibe, on Friday, the summons was prompted by serious allegations of corruption involving the EFCC and the Nigerian Correctional Services.

Among those invited are ACG Ben Rabbi Freedman, who was the Controller of Corrections for Lagos at the time, Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Board, Micheal Anugwa, DCC in charge of Medium Security, and Sikiru Adekunle, DCC in charge of Maximum Security. Both Bobrisky and VeryDarkMan were also summoned.

In April, Bobrisky was arrested by the EFCC on six counts, including money laundering and currency mutilation. During his trial at the Federal High Court in Lagos, Justice Abimbola Awogboro dismissed the money laundering charges but sentenced the social media personality to six months in prison for currency abuse.

Just over a month after his release, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, leaked an audio recording on Instagram in which Bobrisky allegedly claimed that EFCC officials extorted ₦15 million from him to drop the money laundering charges. According to VeryDarkMan, the audio was released after Bobrisky refused to repay ₦4 million borrowed from someone to help raise the bribe.

Following these allegations, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede ordered an immediate investigation and called on both Bobrisky and VeryDarkMan to report to the EFCC’s Lagos office for questioning. Additionally, Vanguard reported that the Minister of Interior has initiated a separate inquiry into Bobrisky’s claims of bribing prison officials to avoid serving time during his sentence.
