Rivers confirms bird flu outbreak in poultry farm

The Rivers State Government has confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, at a poultry farm in Iriebe Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Victor Kii, disclosed in a statement that the outbreak occurred in a 3,000-capacity poultry farm. In response, the ministry has quarantined the affected farm, culled the infected birds, and decontaminated the premises to curb the spread.

A veterinary team is conducting surveillance in surrounding areas, monitoring for any signs of the disease in other farms or wild bird populations. Kii urged poultry farmers and the public to report unusual bird symptoms, including sudden deaths, reduced egg production, or respiratory distress, for prompt action.

He assured the public that immediate measures are in place, emphasizing the state’s commitment to food safety and community health. The Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with the Nigerian Veterinary Association to ensure international best practices in managing the outbreak.
