Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reiterated their recognition of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the leader of the party in Rivers State, despite ongoing tension with former governor Nyesom Wike.
DAILY POST reports that a leadership tussle has emerged between Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Fubara over control of the party’s structure in Rivers State.
Wike has warned the PDP governors to stay out of the Rivers State party leadership, threatening to destabilize their respective states if they continue backing his estranged political protégé, Fubara.
In response to Wike’s fiery statements, Governor Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, stood his ground, affirming that their support for Fubara remains unchanged.
During a meeting with a delegation from the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), Mohammed, who is also the Governor of Bauchi State, emphasized that the decision to back Fubara was in line with party norms.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Mohammed declared, “As the number one member of the PDP in Rivers State, Governor Fubara has the rightful authority over the party’s structure. The NWC delegation has expressed its support for the PDP Governors’ Forum’s decision to back him as the leader of the party in the state.”
He added, “This decision aligns with the rule of law, and the delegation has given a firm commitment to support the stance of the PDP Governors’ Forum in Rivers State.”
Addressing the strained relationship between Wike and Fubara, Mohammed acknowledged their mentor-mentee dynamic but noted that efforts are being made behind the scenes to reconcile the two leaders.
“While we cannot dictate the terms of their reconciliation, we are committed to ensuring the right thing is done for the unity of the party,” Mohammed concluded.
