Same-sex marriage is forbidden in Nigeria – Police

The Police Force Headquarters in Abuja has officially stated that same-sex marriage is unlawful and forbidden in Nigeria as per Sections 214 to 217 of the Criminal Code.

In response to recent trends on social media, the Nigeria Police Force has addressed the legal dimensions surrounding unnatural offenses and same-sex marriage. The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, stressed that the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 strictly prohibits same-sex marriage in Nigeria.

ACP Adejobi outlined the legal aspects related to unnatural offenses and same-sex marriage under the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, which is applicable in Southern states, and Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code, which applies in the Northern part of the country.

The statement emphasized, “It is crucial to understand that same-sex marriage is explicitly prohibited in Nigeria. The Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 criminalizes the solemnization, operation, and public display of same-sex marriages.”

Addressing recent activities on social media where some individuals identifying as queer were seen endorsing and associating with activities deemed unnatural by Nigerian laws, the Nigeria Police Force aims to educate the public on the legal implications of unnatural offenses and same-sex marriage within the country.

The statement clarified that unnatural offenses are prohibited under Sections 214 to 217 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act applicable in the Southern states. These sections criminalize acts deemed unnatural, such as engaging in carnal knowledge against the order of nature or with an animal. Offenders may face legal consequences as prescribed by the law.

The same sentiment is echoed in Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code, applicable in the Northern part of the country. The statement concluded by reiterating the strict prohibition of same-sex marriage in Nigeria under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014, emphasizing the need for understanding and compliance with these laws, as any violation will be subject to appropriate legal processes.
