Former Barcelona striker, Samuel Eto’o is facing accusations of involvement in match-fixing.
The former Chelsea standout is reportedly implicated in orchestrating the promotion of Cameroonian football club Victoria United to the first division.
An audio recording has surfaced, purportedly featuring Eto’o making promises to ensure a club’s promotion through game-fixing. In the recording, he can be heard telling someone, “there are things we can do…. we’ll give you your three points.”
“Opopo must go up to the first division. This is our goal. This is our federation. Victoria United will go up.”
For his part, the former Barcelona attacker has denied all accusations, and said he just telling his “friend” that “I would have done everything possible to avoid any refereeing errors against him.”
However, the Guardian have now reported that, from a letter seen by them, police in Cameroon have opened an investigation into alleged ‘abuse of authority and corruption’.
