Jadon Sancho scored the only goal of the game as Manchester United recorded three successive league wins for the first time this calendar year by beating Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Thursday evening.
New signings were watching on for both teams on transfer deadline day, with Leicester having brought in Wout Faes and Manchester United confirming the signings of Antony and Martin Dubravka earlier in the day.
Cristiano Ronaldo was also reduced to a spectator role from the start as it was confirmed that he will remain at the club until at least January, while new signing Casemiro was also forced to settle for a place on the bench.
The decisive moment of the contest arrived midway through the first half when through-balls from Bruno Fernandes and then Marcus Rashford exposed a wide-open Leicester defence, leaving Sancho with the relatively simple task of taking the ball around the keeper and slotting it into the empty net.
That was one of few clear-cut chances across the 90 minutes, with Leicester coming closest through a fine James Maddison free kick which David de Gea pushed away.
The Foxes produced a better second-half display after rumbles of discontent greeted the half-time whistle, but they struggled to mount any serious threat and it was Man United who created the better chances, with Rashford firing wide and Ronaldo failing to connect cleanly with an acrobatic scissor kick.
Leicester did have one late chance to nick a point in stoppage time, but James Justin sliced his effort high and wide from inside the box.
Man United’s victory lifts them up to fifth in the Premier League table with nine points from their opening five games, bouncing back from two defeats in a row at the start of the campaign to win their next three.
Leicester, meanwhile, remain stuck at the foot of the table having now lost four successive games and taken only one point from a possible 15 so far this season.
