Following the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu on Sunday, a new team is set to be announced in the offing.
The police authorities finally bowed to pressure and scraped SARS following a nationwide call for the proscription of the police unit by Nigerians and the international community.
Protests against the extra-judicial killings by operatives of SARS and men of the Nigeria police have been ongoing across the country for days now.
The protest has gained global attention with popular entertainers, athletes and journalists joining the EndSARS campaign.
Following the nationwide outcry, SARS was finally scrapped on Sunday with officers and men serving in the Unit asked to be redeployed to other Police Commands, Formations and Units.
Police PRO, Frank Mba said “a new policing arrangement for tackling the offences of Armed-Robbery and other violent crimes will be unveiled to the public soon.”
A reliable insider said President Buhari was advised to collapse SARS and announce a new unit which may be headed by DCP Abba Kyari of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IGP-IRT) or any other senior officer.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, told IDOMA VOICE that “the President is really sad over the development; he believes the protest has tainted the image of Nigeria before the international community.
“Very soon, a new team may be announced. Five persons have been penned down for the job. They include newly-promoted DCP Abba Kyari of the IGP-IRT and four others,” the source told IDOMA VOICE on Sunday.
The source further said DCP Kyari was considered for the job due to his vast knowledge in intelligence gathering.
