Senator Elisha Abbo, recently ousted from the Senate by the Court of Appeal, has alleged that Senate President Godswill Akpabio conspired to orchestrate his removal through the court.
Abbo made these allegations at his residence in Abuja on Monday, shortly after the Court of Appeal nullified his election into the Senate.
The Adamawa senator asserted that Akpabio had intentions to also remove Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the former chief whip of the senate, and four other senators who did not support his bid for the senate presidency.
He strongly criticized the court’s judgment as a blow to democracy and called on his supporters to stand by him despite the ruling.
Abbo maintained his claim that, despite the court declaring Amos Yohanna of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the February election, he was the actual victor, stating a margin of victory of 11,000 votes over the PDP candidate.
In the unanimous decision by a three-member panel of Justices at the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, the tribunal’s judgment affirming Abbo as the valid winner of the Senatorial seat was vacated. The panel found merit in an appeal lodged by Amos Yohanna, the PDP candidate.
Senator Abbo, whose re-election bid was terminated by the appellate court verdict, gained notoriety in 2019 when he assaulted a lady, Ms. Osimibibra Warmate, in a sex toy shop in Abuja.
Following the incident, he was ordered by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory to pay N50 million in damages to the lady, a decision subsequently affirmed by a panel of the appellate court led by Justice Jamilu Tukur. Despite the setback, Abbo confirmed his removal from the legislative house in a Facebook post on Monday, urging his supporters and constituents to remain calm.
