SEMA: Benue commences distribution of relief materials to flood victims

Benue State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA on Tuesday, commenced the distribution of relief materials to victims of the 2020 flooding in the state.

The materials which were supplied by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA would be distributed to victims of the natural disaster in the first phase of the exercise in four flood prone local government areas of Agatu, Guma, Makurdi and Otukpo.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Benue State, Dr Emmanuel Shior said, the essence of the distribution was to bring succour to victims of the 2020 flood victims in Benue state, promising that victims of flood prone areas of the local government councils would be given topmost priority.

Dr Shior added that the state had witnessed perennial flooding which had rendered many people homeless, advising the people living around flood prone areas in the state to listen and adhere strictly to early warnings by SEMA.

Speaking on behalf of the Director General of NEMA, AVM Muhammadu Mohammed rtd, the North Central Coordinator of the agency, Mr Eugene Lalong said, NEMA had earlier carried out impact assessment and enumeration of high risk areas of the state, saying the distribution was part of the first phase exercise, aimed at ameliorating the negative effects of the disaster caused the victims.

He added that the agency would monitor the distribution to ensure a smooth and successful exercise.

He called on the people to be conscious and prepared to avert further flood disaster in the years ahead.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, the Executive Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Rt.Hon George Alli thanked NEMA for the supply of the relief materials, promising that the items would be distributed to the affected victims of the 2020 flooding in the state.

Items distributed include; building materials, food items, clothing, etc.
