Semi Ajayi faces injury setback, doubtful for World Cup qualifiers

Nigeria defender Semi Ajayi may be facing another spell on the sidelines after appearing to suffer a hamstring injury during West Bromwich Albion’s 2-0 victory over Oxford United on Saturday.

The 31-year-old had only just returned to action after more than three months out following surgery earlier in the season.

Making just his second appearance since recovery, Ajayi was forced off four minutes before halftime, with Mason Holgate replacing him.

West Brom now awaits the results of scans to determine the severity of the centre-back’s injury, raising concerns about his availability for Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Ajayi’s setback puts his participation in doubt for the Super Eagles’ crucial fixtures against Rwanda and Zimbabwe next month.

Nigeria will face Rwanda in a matchday five clash at Amahoro Stadium, Kigali, on March 21, before hosting Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, four days later.
