Senate 2019: Crisis hits Benue APC over endorsement of Steven Lawani as David Mark’s successor; aspirant threatens to join SDP

All is not currently well with the All Progressives Congress in Benue South Senatorial District following the alleged endorsement of Steven Lawani as the next senator representing the zone in 2019 by the party leadership.

IDOMA VOICE had it on good authorities that former governor of the state; Senator George Akume, had at a meeting in Makrudi endorsed Lawani, 70, as the possible successor of the incumbent, Senator David Mark.

According to insiders, Akume reportedly told other aspirants to back Lawani, whom according to him can match anybody that would bear the PDP’s flag.

The development angered some of the aspirants who expressed displeasures over Akume’s decision.

Some of them were quoted as telling the ex-governor that they should be allowed to go into the field for primary instead of making backyard endorsement on behalf of the people of the zone.

One of the aspirants, who stormed out of the meeting held at Akume’s Makurdi home, was quoted as saying that ‘there are many fishes in the rivers,’ an indication that there are many other parties out there.

The gangling politician said if Akume eventually succeeded by imposing Lawani on them, he would have no choice than to pitch his tent with the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

He claimed that age was no longer on the side of Lawani.

Several calls to Apeh Peter, the Publicity Director of the APC in Benue State for comment were fruitless at the time of this report.

Also, SMS sent to the party’s scribe was not replied.
