The Senate has approved a total budget of N124.2 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) for the 2024 fiscal year. The approval followed the presentation and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs during plenary on Wednesday.

Presenting the report, Vice Chairman of the committee, Senator Yunus Akintunde (APC, Oyo State), stated that the committee retained the proposed budget figure, allocating N1.2 billion for personnel expenses and N98.6 billion for capital projects.

Senator Akintunde explained that the budget is designed to boost police operations across the country. It covers the training of personnel, renovation and construction of police stations, and the upgrade of critical infrastructure. It also includes funding for the rehabilitation of police barracks and clinics, as well as the acquisition of compressed natural gas vehicles to improve mobility and promote energy sustainability within the force.

In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed confidence that the budget would significantly enhance national security. He emphasized the need for strict oversight by the Police Affairs Committee to ensure accountability and transparency in the fund’s implementation.

“The expenditures from the Police Trust Fund should directly enhance security across the country,” Akpabio said. “The committee must ensure proper oversight so that every Kobo appropriated is used effectively for the benefit of the police and the Nigerian people.”
