On Tuesday, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff (COAS) after adopting the screening report from its Committee on Army.
The report, presented during plenary by the Committee Chairman, Sen. Abdulaziz Yar’adua (APC-Katsina), highlighted Oluyede’s exceptional credentials, notable achievements, and thorough understanding of the responsibilities of the office.
Yar’adua noted that Oluyede’s nomination aligns with Section 217, Subsection 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18, Subsection 1 of the Armed Forces Act. He emphasized that Oluyede possesses the necessary competence, experience, and educational qualifications to effectively serve as Chief of Army Staff.
The Department of State Services (DSS) also cleared Oluyede, confirming he had followed the correct promotion procedures, making him fully qualified for the role.
Following Yar’adua’s recommendation, the Senate unanimously approved Oluyede’s appointment, officially cementing his position as Chief of Army Staff.
This confirmation follows a similar endorsement by the House of Representatives days earlier.
