Senate responds to Natasha Akpoti’s allegations at UN conference

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s complaint at the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Conference in New York continues to spark reactions.

The Kogi Central lawmaker had petitioned the global body, seeking intervention over what she described as injustice against her. In response, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) assured her it would review the matter after hearing from all sides.

The Nigerian Senate, through its leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, refuted Natasha’s claims in a letter presented by Hon. Kafilat Ogbara at the event. The letter clarified that Natasha was suspended for misconduct, not allegations of sexual harassment, and accused certain media outlets of spreading false narratives.

Despite this, Ogbara called for a thorough investigation into Natasha’s allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. She maintained that due process was followed before Natasha’s six-month suspension.

Natasha had earlier accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, but her petition was dismissed before her suspension. She remains determined to fight what she calls “injustice,” while Akpabio has denied all allegations.

Her clash with the Senate President reportedly started on February 20, 2025, after her seat was reassigned during plenary, leading to a heated exchange that escalated into the ongoing controversy.
