Senator Abba Moro moves motion on herdsmen attacks in Benue South

The Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District and Senate Minority Leader, Comrade Abba Moro, on Thursday raised alarm on the floor of the Nigerian Senate over renewed attacks by suspected herdsmen on communities within his constituency, resulting in the loss of lives and widespread destruction of property.

Presenting a motion titled “Herdsmen Attacks on Akpete/Ojantele Communities of Apa Local Government Area of Benue South Senatorial District: Urgent Need for Senate’s Intervention,” Senator Moro condemned the sustained violence targeting his constituents, citing the latest attacks on Akpete and Ojantele communities in Apa Local Government Area on May 1 and May 7, 2025.

He noted with concern that at least thirteen innocent residents were killed while engaged in their daily activities, leaving their families and communities devastated. He expressed sadness that these attacks are part of a recurring wave of violence and kidnappings in Benue South and that, despite the scale of the atrocities, no perpetrator has been apprehended so far.

Describing the situation as both tragic and unacceptable, Senator Moro called on the Senate to take immediate action to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of his people, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention to prevent further bloodshed. He urged the Nigeria Police and other relevant security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into the attacks to arrest and prosecute those responsible.

He also requested the federal government to intensify surveillance efforts in the affected communities and tasked security agencies with reviewing their operational strategies to better anticipate and prevent such attacks.

Additionally, he called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to promptly provide relief materials to displaced residents of the affected communities.

Following his presentation, the Senate unanimously adopted all five prayers contained in the motion. A one-minute silence was observed in honour of the victims of the recent and previous attacks in Benue South.
