Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the Senate, has refuted speculations about a discord between her and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Kingibe underscored the unique nature of the FCT’s separation of powers, emphasizing the necessity for a careful examination of its intricacies.
She pointed out that the FCT operates differently from other regions, where the highest elected official is the Senator rather than a governor. Kingibe stressed the importance of ministers recognizing the supervisory role of the National Assembly and its members over their actions in the FCT, where the division of powers between the executive and the legislature is ambiguous.
Despite these challenges, Senator Kingibe expressed her dedication to collaborating with all parties to address crucial governance issues. She highlighted her commitment to tackling the people’s needs, prioritizing concerns such as security, hunger, water, hospitals, and schools.
Kingibe explained, “It’s crucial to acknowledge the distinct operational dynamics of the Federal Capital Territory compared to other regions. Here, the Senator holds the highest elected position, not a governor. Additionally, the ambiguous division of powers between the executive and the legislature in the FCT demands careful scrutiny.”
She continued, “Throughout history, despite structural challenges, previous ministers have recognized legislators as representatives of the people, collaborating to address the needs of the populace and alleviating systemic flaws. It’s imperative for every minister to acknowledge the supervisory role of the National Assembly over their actions, which seems to be the focal point of the current dispute.”
“As a Senator, I am eager to pursue numerous initiatives, subject to our budget constraints. My focus is on prioritizing the smaller yet significant aspects of governance, aiming to address the diverse needs of the people,” she concluded.
