Seun Kuti: Nigeria only competes in low-cost Olympic sports

Popular singer Seun Kuti has sharply criticized the Nigerian government for its lack of investment in sports, following Team Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

In a viral video on social media, Seun Kuti expressed his frustration, pointing out that Nigeria only participated in sports that require minimal financial investment.

“I watched the Olympic games and was disheartened by our poor performance,” Seun said. “We only competed in sports that don’t need much investment. For instance, in football, all you need is a ball and a makeshift goalpost, but we weren’t present in sports that require proper equipment like rackets, basketball courts, and so on.”

He further lamented that Nigerians miss out on developing their children’s talents due to a lack of investment in sports like gymnastics. “I saw many athletes with Nigerian names excelling for other countries. If we had invested in training our own children, imagine the talents we could have nurtured.”

Seun also questioned why Nigeria doesn’t establish well-funded sports leagues. “We could easily create a league with substantial rewards. Our athletes deserve the same opportunities as those in Europe.”
