Sewage pit claims four lives in Imo community

Residents of Egbu in Owerri North LGA, Imo State, are in mourning after four young men tragically lost their lives while trying to clean out a sewage pit in Umunwokoji Umuayalu village.

Reports indicate that the incident took a mysterious turn when the four workers took turns entering the pit but did not emerge alive.

According to a local source who wished to remain anonymous, the first worker entered the pit to remove waste but was unable to escape. In efforts to rescue him, the second, third, and fourth workers also entered and met the same fate.

The bodies of the four victims have been recovered and taken to the mortuary. The cause of their deaths remains unclear.

Environmental engineer Sunday Ihekire commented on the tragedy, emphasizing the need for strict safety protocols in hazardous tasks. “This incident is a tragic reminder of the importance of safety measures. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families during this difficult time,” he said.

A resident described the event as a bad omen and revealed that among the deceased was a newly married man with a one-month-old baby
