During a press briefing in Benin City on Friday, Shaibu claimed to have evidence supporting allegations of looting and last-minute borrowing from financial institutions.
He urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant agencies to investigate the alleged misappropriation of funds intended for projects within the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, the ongoing Radisson Hotel project, and recent appointments made by the outgoing administration.
“I have received concerning reports of banks and other financial institutions granting last-minute loans to Governor Godwin Obaseki. This is alarming and raises questions of good faith. Consequently, I am issuing a strong warning to banks and financial institutions not to extend any loans or financial instruments to Governor Obaseki or any official of the state government in any capacity,” he stated.
Shaibu further revealed that he has information suggesting plans to siphon state funds through NGOs, disguised as support for various projects and activities.
“These actions threaten our state’s financial stability and could mortgage the future of Edo State. I dissociate myself and my office from any such dealings,” he asserted.
He also mentioned reports of indiscriminate and secretive appointments into the civil and public service at inflated grade levels.
“I condemn these actions and dissociate myself and my office from any involvement. These appointments have not only undermined the integrity of the civil service but have also fostered a culture of cronyism,” he added.
Shaibu also alleged that consultants were being appointed with backdated engagement dates to justify excessive expenditures.
