The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has disclosed that youths in Borno State are resorting to consuming fermented human urine aged over 10 days as a substitute for hard drugs.
The Commander of Narcotics for NDLEA in Borno State, Iliyasu Mani, issued a statement in Maiduguri highlighting the prevalent abuse of psychoactive substances among the youth.
Acciording to him, in addition to fermented human urine, the youths are reportedly experimenting with unconventional substances such as lizard dung, camel urine, Lipton soaked in gin, and a mixture of mentholated spirits with soft drinks.
He said, “Let me state categorically here that these new psychoactive substances that are commonly abused today include Cannabis Sativa, skunk, cough syrup with codeine, Ice, Tramadol, Rohypnol, Diazepam, Pentazocine, rubber solution, glue, gutter dirt, toilet fumes, lizard dung.”
Despite the NDLEA’s efforts to combat drug abuse, Mani decried the escalating challenge, particularly with the involvement of young teens and women in the abuse of these new psychoactive substances.
However, he urged against losing hope and highlighted the agency’s commitment to prevention strategies, including the establishment of a remodeled counseling/rehab center within the Borno State Command premises.
Mani also revealed that his Command had set up drop-in centers across all tertiary institutions to function as drug abuse research centers.
