Six killed, 60 injured in Kogi road crash

A fatal road crash in Lokoja, Kogi State, has resulted in the deaths of six individuals and left 60 others injured.

According to reports from PUNCH Metro, the incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday near the ‘zone 8’ Roundabout along Hassan Katsina Road in Lokoja.

Mr. Samuel Oyedeji, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kogi, confirmed that the crash was caused when an articulated truck, traveling from Bauchi to Enugu State, lost control. He emphasized the urgent need for improved road safety measures, particularly in Lokoja, which serves as a key transit hub between northern and southern Nigeria.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as emergency responders worked to manage the aftermath. “It was a horrific sight. People were trapped, and it took hours to clear the scene,” said a local resident.

Oyedeji urged drivers, particularly those of heavy-duty vehicles, to exercise caution and called for greater government efforts in addressing road infrastructure and enforcing traffic regulations.

“As investigations continue into the cause of the accident, Nigerians are reminded of the collective responsibility to ensure safer roads for all,” he said.

The bodies of the six victims were taken to the Federal University Teaching Hospital mortuary.
