Six killed, many injured as farmers, herders clash in Jigawa

No fewer than six persons have been reportedly killed as farmers and herders clash in Guri Local Government Area, Jigawa State.

It was gathered that many others sustained various degrees of injuries from the clash.

Information from the area last night indicated that the conflict which had been brewing as a result of the disagreement between the two groups, climaxed on Friday, leading to the death of the victims.

The state police command, which confirmed the development, however, said two were killed in the incident and five persons, who were injured have been transferred to Hadejia General Hospital for further treatment.

The Spokesman for the Command, ASP Lawan Shisu Adam, in a statement last night said one person has been arrested in connection with the crisis, while the rest have fled.

But he said that efforts were in top gear to ensure the arrest of the remaining suspects.

According to the spokesman, the Police on Friday received information on the clash between the herders and the farmers at Magiram Village in Guri Local Government Area.

“On the receipt of the report, a team of policemen from the Divisional headquarters Guri, Operation Puff Ardder, Operation Salama, led by the DPO, Guri, CSP Mohammed Usman were drafted to the scene.

“On their arrival, two corpses; of one Umar Abdul Rahusa aged 35 of Guri, and a yet-to-be-identified man were recovered. Five injured men were rescued and rushed to Hadejia General Hospital for treatment.”

He added that one Adamu Ahmadu, 25, of Galdimari Fulani Settlement in the local government was arrested in connection with the incident

The State Police Commissioner Aliyu Sale Tafida and other high ranking officers of the command, he said, have visited the scene to access to get incident.

He added that the area has been fortified and reinforced with surveillance/foot deployed to the area while vehicle patrol has intensified with a view to maintaining peace in the affected area.

Meanwhile, the spokesman confirmed that law, order and calm have returned to the area and advised residents of the area to go about with their normal activities without any danger of molestation.

He added that investigation had since begun into the incident, assuring that efforts were in top gear to arrest the fleeing suspects.

He noted that upon the completion of the investigation, the arrested suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.
