Sponsor your parents and grandparents to Canada: How to apply

The process of sponsoring your parents and grandparents to come to Canada involves several steps. As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the information might have changed, so it’s crucial to check the official website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for the most up-to-date information. Here’s a general guide based on the previous requirements:

  1. Eligibility Criteria:

    • You (the sponsor) must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
    • You must be at least 18 years old.
    • You must prove that you can financially support your parents or grandparents and meet the minimum necessary income level.
  2. Prepare to Apply:

    • Make sure you have the required documents, including proof of your status in Canada, proof of relationship, and financial documents.
    • Be aware of the application cycles, as the sponsorship process typically opens for a limited time each year.
  3. Income Requirement:

    • You need to meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for the three consecutive taxation years immediately preceding the date of your application.
  4. Complete the Interest to Sponsor Form:

    • When the program opens, submit an “Interest to Sponsor” form on the IRCC website. This form is typically available for a limited time, and only a certain number of sponsors are selected.
  5. Invitation to Apply:

    • If you are selected, you will receive an invitation to apply. You will have a specific time frame to submit the complete application.
  6. Complete the Application Package:

    • Download the application package from the IRCC website and fill out all the required forms.
    • Include all necessary supporting documents.
  7. Submit the Application:

    • Pay the required fees and submit the application to the address provided in the guide.
  8. Processing Time:

    • The processing time can vary. Check the current processing times on the IRCC website.
  9. Decision:

    • If your application is approved, your parents or grandparents will receive a Permanent Resident visa.

It’s important to note that the information and requirements may change, so always refer to the official IRCC website or consult with a qualified immigration professional for the most current information. Additionally, make sure to regularly check for updates or changes in immigration policies and procedures.
