Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, has announced a significant increase in its subscription prices for Nigerian users. The revised pricing takes effect immediately for new customers and will apply to existing users starting January 27, 2025.
According to Tribune Online, Nigeria was the first African nation to receive Starlink’s satellite-based internet service when it launched operations in January 2023.
In an email sent to subscribers on Friday, Starlink explained that the price hike is aimed at improving its network infrastructure and maintaining high-quality internet service across Nigeria.
“These changes reflect our commitment to investing in the infrastructure needed to support and improve your experience with Starlink,” the company stated.
Subscribers who wish to discontinue the service were informed that they could cancel their subscription at any time.
This development follows a controversial attempted price hike in September 2024, when Starlink raised its standard monthly fee by 97% from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000, citing inflation as the primary reason.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) initially threatened to sanction Starlink for implementing the increase without approval. However, the NCC later withdrew its statement, causing confusion among users.
In response to public backlash, Starlink temporarily suspended the price hike and offered credits to affected customers while resolving the regulatory dispute.
