Steps to take when invited under the parents and grandparents program 2023

If you’ve received an email regarding the sponsorship of your parents or grandparents, you, as well as the individuals you wish to sponsor, must complete the application online through the Permanent Residence Portal. This application should be submitted by either the principal applicant (your parent or grandparent) or an authorized representative acting on their behalf.

If an authorized representative is submitting the application on behalf of the principal applicant, they must access their Representative Residence Portal account to do so.

Please ensure that IRCC receives your application no later than December 22nd, 2023, at 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time. IRCC will not accept applications that are submitted after this deadline or that are incomplete.

In the event that you, your parents, grandparents, or the representative encounter difficulties with the online application, you may request an application in an alternative format.

When uploading your information and supporting documents, you should have received a barcode from IRCC via email, which corresponds to the information you provided when expressing your interest to sponsor. This barcode must be included as a digital copy under the “Additional Supporting Documents” section, with the document name specified as “Other” within the portal.

To ensure the completeness of your application:

  1. Follow all the steps outlined in the provided application guide.
  2. The information in your sponsorship application must match the details you provided on your 2020 Interest to Sponsor form, including the submission of an exact copy of your status in Canada document.
  3. Ensure that all required fees are paid online. IRCC does not accept any other payment methods. Failure to provide proof of payment for the necessary fees will result in your application being considered incomplete and rejected by IRCC for processing.
  4. Determine whether biometrics are required. If so, it’s recommended to pay the biometrics fee at the same time as your application fees.
  5. You have the option to submit your Social Insurance Number (SIN) and grant IRCC consent on the Financial Evaluation for Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship (IMM 5768) form. This allows IRCC to directly access your personal income tax information from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to verify your income eligibility.
    • If you prefer not to provide consent and your SIN, you must complete and submit the Income Sources for the Sponsorship of Parents and Grandparents (IMM 5748) form, along with your Notices of Assessment issued by the CRA for the tax years 2020, 2021, and 2022.
    • Personal tax information can be obtained using the CRA’s My Account online service.
  6. The sponsor and your co-signer, if applicable, must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirement for each of the three consecutive tax years immediately preceding your application date. For the 2023 intake, IRCC evaluates sponsors based on their income for the tax years 2022, 2021, and 2020.

The income requirement for the 2020 and 2021 tax years remains at the minimum necessary income, without the additional 30% requirement, to accommodate those who may have experienced a temporary loss of income during the pandemic.

The MNI serves as an important eligibility criterion for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), demonstrating the sponsor’s financial capability to support the individuals they wish to bring to Canada. You can find more information on the MNI for the PGP by clicking here.
