Sunday Igboho, the prominent Yoruba nation advocate, has been released and is preparing to depart from Cotonou, Benin Republic, to Nigeria after an almost two-year period of confinement. In a statement titled “My Release in Benin Republic” released on Sunday, Igboho expressed his freedom to return to Nigeria and travel globally, asserting that he has met all the necessary legal requirements for his previous bail. However, he did not specify the exact date of his return to Nigeria.
He extended his gratitude to President Talon of Benin Republic, Professor Banji Akintoye, Professor Wole Soyinka, as well as Yoruba community leaders, politicians, media, academia, and Yoruba monarchs for their unwavering support during his trial in Cotonou. He also acknowledged the prayers and support from religious leaders, pastors, Muslim clerics, and traditional worshippers.
Igboho expressed appreciation to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Baba Ayo Adebanjo for their roles, highlighting the importance of freedom granted by God. He acknowledged various Yoruba royal fathers and notable figures for their support and emphasized the need for collective efforts to liberate Yoruba land. He further acknowledged specific individuals and groups for their support, urging unity among the Yoruba people to elevate the Yoruba nation.
Recalling his arrest on July 20, 2021, while attempting to travel to Germany, and subsequent bail, Igboho expressed his readiness to return to Nigeria, signifying the end of legal constraints during his stay in Cotonou.
