Supreme Court Justice Chima Centus Nweze dies at 64

Justice Chima Centus Nweze of the Supreme Court of Nigeria has been reported dead at the age of 64. The sad news emerged on Sunday, leaving the nation mourning the loss of a respected judicial figure.

As of the time of this report, the Supreme Court has yet to officially confirm the passing of Justice Nweze. Details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain undisclosed.

Justice Nweze’s legacy extends beyond his role on the Supreme Court bench. In 2020, he gained attention for delivering a dissenting judgment that declared Emeka Ihedioha of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the 2019 Governorship election in Imo State. The ruling stirred significant controversy and debate.

Moreover, Justice Nweze was involved in another significant decision in the Supreme Court, where a split judgment of three-against-two proclaimed then Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, as the authentic candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe North Senatorial District in the 25 February general election.

Born on September 25, 1958, in Obollo, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Justice Nweze’s journey to the Supreme Court was marked by hard work and dedication to the law. In 2014, Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration approved the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC) to appoint Justice Nweze to the esteemed position on the supreme court.
