The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of a suspected armed robber who succumbed to injuries in the hospital after being rescued from an attempted lynching.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this to reporters on Monday, stating that the incident occurred on Saturday at Akerele Junction in the Agege area.

According to Hundeyin, a distress call was received at the Isokoko Police Division regarding a suspected robber known for snatching mobile phones from commuters.

“The suspect was caught and severely beaten by an angry mob, who were about to lynch him when police officers arrived. Upon sighting the officers, the mob dispersed,” Hundeyin said.

The injured suspect was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention but later died from his injuries.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased and his accomplices, who are currently at large, had allegedly stabbed a middle-aged woman before dispossessing her of her phone. The victim was taken to the hospital, where she is receiving treatment.

The police spokesperson added that the woman had been visited at the hospital, where medical personnel examined and photographed her injuries.

Meanwhile, the deceased’s body has been deposited at a public morgue by the Lagos State Health and Monitoring Unit.

Hundeyin assured that efforts were underway to apprehend other members of the criminal gang as well as those responsible for the act of jungle justice. Investigations are ongoing.
