Suspected herdsmen kill two, injure many in fresh Benue attack
Two people have been confirmed killed following a renewed assault by suspected armed herdsmen in Mbamar community, located close to the railway corridor in the Daudu axis of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
In addition to the fatalities, several residents sustained injuries during the incident, while others were reported missing and their whereabouts remain unknown.
A community member, who requested anonymity, disclosed that the victims were internally displaced persons who had returned to Mbamar to check on their ancestral property when the attack occurred.
“They were displaced persons who went to see their family land in Mbamar when the armed herders suddenly attacked them.
Two of them were killed on the spot, some people managed to escape with injuries, while others are still missing as we speak,” he said.
One of those killed was identified as Ortwer Tyonum. As of the time this report was compiled, the identity of the second victim had not been officially established.
The source further revealed that a young boy who accompanied the group narrowly escaped unhurt during the attack.
He added that relatives of the deceased later recovered their bodies, while community members expressed deep concern over the absence of security operatives in the area.
“There is no security here. That is why these attacks keep happening. People are afraid to go to their farms or even visit their homes,” he said.
The resident also alleged that armed attackers had destroyed farmlands across Mbamar, Dudu and neighbouring settlements, worsening food shortages and economic difficulties for locals.
“Our crops have been destroyed, and many farmers can no longer access their land. This is affecting our survival and livelihood,” he said.
Residents have appealed to the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to urgently deploy security forces to the affected communities to curb further violence.
Attempts to contact the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, for comments were unsuccessful as at press time.
