Manchester United made the dream start to their pre-season preparations, taking the lead inside less than quarter of an hour of their pre-season opener against Liverpool through Jadon Sancho.
The England winger, who joined the club almost a year ago from Borussia Dortmund, bent a right-footed effort past Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson after Bruno Fernandes’ cross was only partially cleared. It was a cool finish from the winger and came as a result of the Reds getting bodies in and around the box.
Sancho had started the match on the right-wing but moved across to the left just minutes before he found the net. Marcus Rashford had started out on the left, but Erik ten Hag, watching from the sidelines, made a tactical tweak.
United, despite needing David de Gea to thwart the dangerous Luis Diaz in the opening exchanges, looked strong and composed in early on, pushing high up the pitch and making attacking runs from deep. Sancho had seen plenty of the ball before his goal and looked lively when running at Liverpool’s youthful full-backs.
Unsurprisingly, Sancho’s strike quickly attracted a reaction on social media.
Despite grabbing an early goal, United were lucky to avoid squandering the lead almost immediately, with the ever dangerous Diaz causing problems. The Colombian fluffed his lines from close range before clipping the outside of the post moments later.
