The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported that the national grid collapse on Monday was partial and has initiated recovery efforts to restore power supply.
Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s spokesperson, clarified in an interview that the entire national grid did not fail, as the Akwa Ibom Generating Station was “islanded” to maintain power supply to certain areas. This allowed continued service through the Eket, Ekim, Uyo, and Itu 132 kilovolt substations.
“It was a partial system disturbance,” Mbah explained. “The entire system did not collapse, as the IBOM Generating Station was isolated to function independently and supply power, preventing a total shutdown.”
She added that recovery efforts are currently underway and have progressed significantly.
This announcement follows IDOMA VOICE reporting that Nigeria was plunged into darkness at 6:48 p.m. on Monday. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the national grid collapse in a statement from its spokesperson, Emeka Ezeh.
Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and Eko Electricity Distribution Company also confirmed the incident.
As a result of the grid failure, TCN recorded zero load allocation to the eleven Electricity Distribution Companies. At the time of this report, power supply had not yet been restored in various parts of the country.
