Tension in Benue as herdsmen kill one, destroys farmlands in fresh attack

Suspected armed herdsmen have reportedly launched a series of coordinated attacks on Yogbo, the administrative headquarters of Mbagwen in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving residents in fear and uncertainty.

The violence reportedly began five days ago, coinciding with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to the state. Eyewitnesses claimed that the assailants stormed the community and opened fire indiscriminately, causing widespread panic.

A quick response from security operatives reportedly forced the attackers to flee, preventing what could have turned into a large-scale massacre.

However, residents said the reprieve was short-lived. The next day, the same suspected herdsmen allegedly returned to the outskirts of Yogbo, grazing cattle on farmlands. Locals, fearing renewed violence, stayed indoors as their crops were trampled and destroyed.

Two days later, another disturbing incident occurred when the assailants reportedly blocked the Yogbo–Gyungu Adze road, ambushed travelers, and killed one person, further deepening community fears of an escalating crisis.

The most recent incident took place on Sunday, June 23, 2025, when Tiv farmers from Yogbo who had gone fishing at River Shina were allegedly ambushed. While full details of casualties remain unclear, residents believe the pattern of attacks points to an orchestrated attempt to destabilize and displace the community.

Local activist Tivta Samuel Aondohemba has issued a desperate call for help, urging the Guma LGA Chairman, Hon. Orwough Maurice, and Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, to act swiftly. He also appealed to security agencies to intensify patrols and secure the area.

“The people of Yogbo are under siege,” Aondohemba said. “We need urgent help. Please share this message—lives are at stake.”

As of press time, neither the Benue State Government nor relevant security authorities have released an official statement concerning the attacks.
