Tensions Soar as Iran Downs US Warplane
A United States fighter jet has reportedly been shot down over Iranian territory, marking the first confirmed loss of a US aircraft to Iran’s air defence systems since the recent escalation of hostilities.
American officials and Iranian state media both confirmed the development, with multiple US sources telling CNN that the aircraft was intercepted and destroyed by Iranian forces.
The jet, widely identified as an F-15E Strike Eagle, is believed to have crashed in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran, roughly 470 kilometres from the capital, Tehran.
Geolocated footage from the area, near a bridge over the Karoon River, shows low-flying military aircraft believed to be part of ongoing search-and-rescue operations following the crash.
US forces have reportedly launched a combat search and rescue mission to locate the crew, said to consist of two pilots.
However, Iranian state media outlets, including Fars News Agency and Tasnim News Agency, claimed that early efforts to locate any ejected crew members had been unsuccessful.
One report by Fars indicated that a reward had been announced for information leading to the capture of any “enemy pilot,” raising concerns about the safety of the crew.
Iranian authorities attributed the downing of the aircraft to advanced air defence systems operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Images and videos circulating on Iranian media purportedly show debris from the crash, including what appears to be an ejection seat, though independent verification remains limited.
Earlier Iranian claims had suggested the aircraft was an F-35 Lightning II, but available evidence and US-based reports point instead to the F-15E.
As of Friday afternoon, neither the Pentagon, United States Central Command, nor the White House has issued an official statement on the incident or the status of the crew.
Observers note that such silence is not unusual during active combat search-and-rescue operations in contested environments.
