A regional convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses in India was marred by a devastating act of terror, resulting in sorrow and loss at the religious gathering. On October 29, 2023, this shocking incident unfolded when at least two bombs exploded during the regional convention held in Kerala, India, just after the opening prayer.
Initial reports indicate that two individuals, described as sisters, lost their lives in the tragic incident. Moreover, more than 55 individuals were injured among the 2,200 attendees. Authorities are actively investigating the situation, and their thoughts and prayers are extended to all those affected.
Kerala’s Director General of Police, Darvesh Saheb, addressed the media, stating, “We will find out who is behind this and take stringent action … preliminary investigation shows it was an IED [improvised explosive device] blast.” Videos captured shortly after the explosion were circulated online, revealing flames within the building and the heroic efforts of rescuers helping people evacuate.
The investigation into this harrowing event is multi-faceted, with Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Law and Order, MR Ajith Kumar, providing insights during a press conference. He noted that an individual named Dominic Martin, claiming responsibility for the explosion, voluntarily surrendered at a police station in Thrissur district, situated approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of the incident’s location.
The suspect has asserted “that he has done it” and disclosed affiliation with the same group known as “sabha.” Authorities are currently in the process of verifying these claims as they continue to delve into the complexities of this tragic incident.
