Benue State, Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia shed light on the reasons behind the continued freezing of state accounts. He emphasized that this measure was necessary to prevent the relentless pilfering of the state treasury.
The Benue State government had previously revealed that certain senior employees within the state were found to be receiving salaries from three different sources: the state government, local government, and the State Universal Basic Education Board.
When questioned about the need to prolong the closure of state accounts, Governor Alia, a Catholic priest-turned-politician, defended the decision, citing the lingering presence of individuals he likened to “hyenas and hawks” eagerly awaiting opportunities for financial misconduct.
He stated, “Even as I speak to you, there are still hyenas and hawks waiting for anything to drop, and they will take advantage of it because landmines have been set. I believe we have acted prudently.”
