Benue State’s Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has issued a fervent call to the people of Benue, urging them to refrain from engaging in defamatory statements and spreading gossip about individuals and institutions. Governor Alia emphasized that while the government will not impose regulations on speech or message content, there will be repercussions for statements that cause harm to organizations or individuals.
Governor Alia made this plea on Saturday in Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue during the funeral of Late John Chia, a former member of the Benue State House of Assembly. He pointed out that Benue State is currently grappling with a flood of deliberate misinformation and urged citizens to avoid making baseless and inflammatory remarks that could undermine social stability in the state.
In addition to addressing the issue of speech, Governor Alia announced a significant initiative to train 10,000 Benue youth in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). He also called on civil servants in the state to demonstrate commitment by being consistently present in their offices during working hours. Any civil servant found displaying laxity would face scrutiny. Furthermore, the governor issued a stern warning against illegal levies and extortion targeting marketers in the state.
Governor Alia encouraged Benue citizens to abide by the law and unite in support of Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, offering their constructive ideas to ensure his success.
Expressing his sadness, the governor acknowledged the late John Chia’s instrumental role in his own ascent to the position of Governor of Benue State. He lamented that Chia, who could have contributed valuable ideas and been part of the success of his leadership, passed away prematurely.
Governor Alia expressed gratitude to the members of the 6th Benue Assembly for their heartfelt support and dedication in honoring the late John Chia during his burial. He also extended his appreciation to the traditional rulers in the state for their continuous efforts in maintaining peace and orderliness in their communities.
