Three police officers fired, set to face court over killing of Kwara Poly student

The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed three officers in connection with the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.

The incident, which occurred on September 4, 2024, sparked widespread outrage and led to the transfer of the case to the police headquarters in Abuja.

The three officers implicated in the incident are Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Samuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip.

According to a statement from the Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, the officers were found guilty of abandoning their assigned duties, engaging in corrupt practices, and unlawfully or unnecessarily exercising their authority.

She said the dismissed officers would be arraigned soon, adding that after a thorough investigation and internal disciplinary trial, the three officers involved have been found guilty.

“The officers have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, effective October 4, 2024, and will be arraigned in court soon,” the statement read.

“This decisive action highlights the unwavering commitment of the IGP to upholding justice, professionalism, and accountability across the Nigeria Police Force.

“Under Egbetokun’s leadership, we are resolute in ensuring that officers conduct themselves with integrity, and any breach of ethical standards, particularly in cases leading to loss of life, will be met with a stiff response,” the statement read.

Ishola, a 21-year-old student in his second year of Electrical/Electronics, was allegedly killed during a protest by students in Ilorin over a hike in fuel prices.
