President Bola Tinubu has approved the employment of 774 National Health Fellows, a key initiative by the Federal Ministry of Health aimed at driving sustainable improvements in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
The announcement was made on Thursday at the programme’s official launch at the State House, Abuja, attended by senior government officials, development partners, and traditional leaders, including the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.
The selection of these fellows one from each local government area—was based on the recommendation of Professor Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
He emphasized the highly competitive nature of the process, noting that the fellows were chosen from over 360,000 applicants. The President’s surprise declaration of automatic employment was met with resounding applause from attendees.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu highlighted the significance of the programme, describing it as a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to empowering Nigeria’s youth.
“This initiative underscores our dedication to harnessing the immense potential of our greatest asset—our young people. With over 60% of Nigerians under the age of 30, we have a dynamic, resourceful generation capable of driving innovation and national development,” he said.
The President urged the fellows to seize the opportunity, positioning themselves as future leaders in the healthcare sector.
“Your selection is not just a recruitment; it reaffirms our commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for every Nigerian, regardless of background. You are this nation’s greatest asset, and we are committed to building a future where Nigeria stands as a source of pride for all,” he affirmed.
Tinubu further stressed the programme’s broader vision of developing a new generation of health leaders who will drive lasting change and innovation in the sector.
“A nation cannot thrive if its people are unhealthy. Sustainable development relies on a robust healthcare system, and you are the pillars of this vision. I am honored to witness this milestone with you,” he stated.
Professor Ali Pate expressed his enthusiasm, describing the initiative as a transformative movement to enhance Nigeria’s healthcare system, with early signs of positive impact already visible.
Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, Youth Minister Ayodele Olawande, and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, also commended the fellows, offering words of encouragement and support.
